QUARANTUTORS 2022 SUMMER PROGRAM

Overview

Starting mid-July, Quarantutors is offering free online summer classes: academic subject preview classes and extracurricular activity classes to help students continue learning and remain engaged throughout the summer.

All academic and extracurricular classes are free of charge and conducted over Zoom in groups of no more than thirty students.

Classes are offered in a five-week session from July 10th to August 7th.

We will continue to offer traditional one-on-one tutoring throughout the summer — just sign up by clicking on the "Register Now" link on our home page. Please note that we require parents and/or students to provide the learning material for tutors to help them with one-on-one. Our tutors are not responsible for preparing their own curriculum to teach students.

Academic Preview Classes

Academic preview classes introduce students to subjects they will be learning in school and provide basic foundations that will help students succeed in class. Hand-picked instructors will give lectures, lead discussions and interactive activities, and provide optional weekly assignments. Our offered academic preview classes are Algebra II for Middle/High School, AP Calculus for High School, and AP English Language and Composition for rising juniors in High School.

Extracurricular Classes

Extracurricular classes provide engagement to students over the summer and an opportunity to explore various activities they may want to participate in at school. Extracurricular classes generally rely on more interactive activities than academic classes. Our extracurricular class offered this year is Writing Analysis for Middle School.

ACADEMIC CLASS LISTINGS

Algebra 2

AP English Language and Composition

Intro to AP Calculus

For Middle and High School

In this course, students will explore the 8 fundamental functions and other related concepts -- such as factoring, inverse functions, and properties of logarithms -- that make the backbone of Algebra 2. Students are expected to have taken Algebra I or an equivalent course prior to taking this course. Don’t you worry! We will have tons of fun learning these concepts through various Desmos activities, Kahoots, and explorations. To strengthen understanding of the concepts taught in class, there will be practice problems available after every class. Students will build a strong foundation in Algebra through this course to improve success in future, advanced mathematics courses.

Intro to AP Calculus

For High School

In this course we’ll cover a basic overview of the reasons for defining limits, derivatives, and integrals. The class is meant to teach the concepts of Calculus with a less formal approach; using visuals, reasoning, and generally less math than a standard math class. The main topics of this class include basic limits, including analyzing limits in graphs and derivative tests, integrals, and various other applications. We will cover theorems such as the fundamental theorem of calculus, mean value theorem, and intermediate value theorem. To make the class friendly to newcomers of Calculus, concepts will be linked back to classes that most students have taken before; for example, relating derivation to position, velocity, and acceleration, as well as discussing basic concepts such as continuity in functions. As such students should come into the class after having taken Math 3 or an equivalent before.

AP English Language and Composition

For High School (Rising 11th Graders)

In this AP Language class students will learn how to master the different aspects of the AP Lang exam as well as improve their writing and analyzing skills. This class deals with pieces of literature (primarily nonfiction) ranging from memoirs to eulogies and students will learn how to carefully comprehend these pieces to the best of their ability. In addition, this class walks students through exactly how to write each of the 3 essays in the AP Lang exam; Rhetorical analysis essay, synthesis essay, and argumentative essay. Not only that, the course will also shift focus to allow students to practice their multiple-choice skills which will also be tested in the exam. The class itself will hold discussions, note-taking, and editing essay exemplars to heighten students’ literacy skills.

Writing Analysis

Middle School

In this course, students will learn to analyze images, short pieces of literature, to prepare for high school classes. On Monday and Thursday, Instructor Zoe Cohn will teach students to explore several pieces of literature to find hidden meanings in order to strengthen analytical skills to improve future analytical essay writing skills. All students are encouraged to keep step by step notes and outlines of writing assignments in a Google Drive Document where they can

reference their wonderful work for the future! This is a great opportunity for students to stretch

their minds to have a better grasp for analytical essay writing in the future!
