Interested in debate? Develop the public speaking and researching skills needed to be a confident debater! Students will learn the fundamentals of Classic Debate in this class through engaging lectures, team research, and fun practice sessions. At the end of the session, participants are encouraged to participate in a real, full-length debate to use and show what they’ve learned. The instructor will provide helpful feedback on presentation skills, arguments, and teach students everything they need to know about the basics of Classic Debate. This class is a great opportunity for students who are curious about joining their high school debate team or want to improve their public speaking skills.
3 p.m. PST on Mondays and Wednesdays, 45 minute classes
Instructor for Classic Debate
Silvie Reitz is a rising senior from Minnesota. She is captain of her school’s debate team and the 2021 season will be her fourth year on the team! Silvie has worked as a coach to Novices on her team and taught a debate class with Quarantutors last summer. As a Novice debater, Silvie placed second at the Minnesota State Tournament. In Junior Varsity, she placed third at the same tournament and tied for first place for individual speaker points. She has also lettered in Debate as a Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity member of her team.
Beyond debate, Silvie is a Varsity member of her school’s speech team, volunteers at a local nature center, and is an officer in her school’s chapter of National Honor Society. Silvie also excels in academics, taking all AP/Honors classes. In her free time, she enjoys singing in her school’s choir, playing the flute, and being outside with friends.
